As a trauma surgeon, I care for many patients affected by gun violence. Many of my patients are young and live in communities that endure chronic stress. As seen during the pandemic, acute stressors disproportionately affect our most vulnerable communities. On the Gulf Coast, we are also experiencing extreme heat, flooding and sea-rise. I truly believe proactive climate preparedness is crucial to the sustainability of the communities I serve.
